type1chat.org home

A special user named Type1Bot, is not a person, but is a computer program that watches over the chat an assists in automated tasks. Here are a few things that it can do.

Info Lines and Greet Messages

The bot will store a single line of information that can remind everyone who you are. This can be anything you want, but by convention, we usually include our name, personal relationship to Type 1, and current regimen. Here's an example:

Scott, father to Alex, 6 years old, dx at 4, Omnipod and Novolog.

This info line is used two different ways:

First, as a greet message. When you log into the room, the bot will annouce your arrival to remind everyone who you are.

Second, you may send the !who command to list everyone's info line all at once. People who are idle are excluded, so this is an easy way to remember who you are talking to right now.

If the bot does not announce your arrival, it is because you are not logged in, and need to send an IDENT.

Register Your Own Info Line

If you have not registered as a user yet, there is a simpler method to do this. On the main channel, use the !myinfo command, on a line by itself. Example:

!myinfo John, father to Jane, 5 years old, dx at 3, MDI Novolog Lantus

If this succeeds, the bot will repsond with:
Hi, John. I see you're new here. Well, new to me, that is.
I've created a user account for you, to remember your info line.
Your password is 123456 should you ever want to change it.
You can change it by sending a PM to me: PASS 123456 newpassword
This does three things in one step: registers a new account, sets a default password, and assings your info line accordingly.

Updating Your Info Line

If you already have an account you will need to send a PM to the bot. You have to use PMs because it will need your password. On a line all by itself, send the following:

  INFO yourpassword infoline

Example:

INFO secret123 John, father to Jane, 5 years old, dx at 3, MDI Novolog Lantus

Paging

If nobody is talking on the channel and you need some help, you may explicitly page members with the !page command. Some members leave their computer logged in to the chat all day, but it's inconvenient to stay glued to the computer all day. Paging the channel will send an SMS message to their mobile phone that you are ready to chat.

Only one page may be active at one time. It will take a few minutes for people to reply, so please be patient.

Auto-Paging

If the channel is idle when you join, the bot will automatically page everyone who is idle. Give us a few minutes to respond!

Receiving Pages

Receiving pages is, of course, optional, and is done via SMS ("text") messages to your mobile phone. Nearly all mobile phones can receive SMS messages via email, even if you have never set it up for email. You do not need a smartphone, any phone will do. This is done at the carrier level, unless you have text messages blocked.

First, look up your country and carrier on this list. Your phone's email will be something like 9675551212@tmomail.net, with your number on the left and a special domain on the right.

From your computer, you might want to experiment sending an email directly to that address, to see if your phone is working properly. If you don't get any message, you might have incoming SMS messages block. If you have never received a text message before, please be aware that many phone companies charge for every incoming message.

Now, send a PM to Type1Bot:

EMAIL 9675551212@tmomail.net

He should respond with:

Now: 9675551212@tmomail.net

If you do not get a response, it is because you are not logged in and need to send and IDENT.

You will only get pages when:

Idle Policy

You are welcome to leave the chat window open all day, and pop in and out as time allows. However, the bot will kick you out of the room after many hours of inactivity. If this happens, please be assured it's not personal. We still like you, and want you to come back. We just don't want people lurking for long periods of time without participating, as it makes people feel "watched". The bot applies this policy impartially.

Conversion functions

The bot can do a lot of calculations related to diabetes, like convert mmol to mg/dl and a1c to average glucose values. Send the !help command get a list of all that it can do.
